Week 5: Journal Reflection....my expectation....

Image
Prompt: Take some time to reflect on how you are anticipating the classroom experience and your teaching of your course.  What student engagement and active learning challenges do you anticipate and what kind of practices are you becoming aware of that you would like to try?  Or maybe this is all new to you; how do you anticipate the use of active learning methods affecting your classroom presence, approach, or management style?  We would just like you to reflect on your anticipated experience in your classroom as you begin working with this new modality.  I actually loathe this prompt.  đź¤Ł This is the question you can't answer.  It's all hypotheticals.  There are too many factors (the students and what they bring to the classroom as baggage being the largest unknown factor).  And I absolutely hate wasting time thinking about what I'm not aware of. I can certainly WANT things to turn out one way.  But I really dislike thinking ahead li...

Week 4: Journal Reflection…..my classroom of “unsmart” technology

Image
Pro mpt:   Hopefully, this week you have been into your classroom for the fall and have had a look at the technology available for you for your F2F+ course. Take some time to reflect on how you are anticipating the classroom experience and your teaching of your course.  Perhaps you have done a course like this already, in that room, and you are old hat at it; how are you thinking about your teaching now?  What challenges do you anticipate or what kind of practices are you becoming aware of that you would like to try?  Or maybe this is all new to you; how do you anticipate this modality affecting your classroom presence, approach, or management style?  We would just like you to reflect on your anticipated experience in your classroom as you set out into working with this new modality.  Welcome to ASAC 214.  My classroom this coming fall for COM 1220 - Intro to Media & Communications.  This is actually a classroom I’m very familiar with…I’ve tau...

Week 3: Journal Entry….Me and my relationship with Technology

Image
PROMPT:   Take a few moments to reflect on your usage of technology. Does technology come easy to you or does technology seem to thwart your every move? When you design your class, how do you decide which technology tools to use? Reflect on your experience as a student during this pilot, your experience in the workshop sessions and using the tools that we have been practicing with.  How is your experience influencing your thoughts/plans about your own instruction?  Hi.  My name is Meaghan.  And I’m an Apple junky.  I’ve been accused of being my own Apple store, being a personal Genius Bar for family and friends, and have way way way too much Apple technology.  I’ve been this way forever.  Always wanting new tech to play with. Does this answer the question?   I LOVE TECHNOLOGY. But I’ve also learned over the years that not everyone is as tech savvy as I am, nor do they all want to play in some of the crazy sandboxes I do.  So over time, I...

Week 2: Journal Entry...Establishing Community Norms

Image
Prompt :   Does UDL along with Accessibility, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion require you to redesign your course syllabus? What changes do you need to make to your course to address these concepts? What a loaded question.  I’ve spent probably too much time thinking about it, and I have so many thoughts (and moods) about it….and given my recent trip to Disney, I can only equate them to the muppets. So here goes….. Creating the perfect syllabus that speaks to everyone in the classroom is much like a perfect recipe.  Everyone’s tastebuds are different though…so what you think is the perfect combination of flavors and textures could be an absolute wreck to the intended audience.  One has to ask themselves, is what I have in this syllabus “bland” enough that everyone gets what they need from it, or do we need to spice it up in a particular way that speaks to the different learning styles one may encounter?  And do I really know ALL of those different ways?  An...

Week 1: Journal Entry…..Accessibility, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Image
Prompt:   Take a few moments to think about what you already know related to Accessibility, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADEI). What do these terms mean (in your own words)? How do these terms relate to your courses? What is your prior experience with ADEI - positive or negative? Can you connect these terms to student success? Finally, what are some concepts related to ADEI that you want to learn more about and explore?  (Image above from the St Louis Arts Council…but one that resonated with me as I sat down to reflect) When I think about Accessibility, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion I think about the following questions…. Accessibility:  Can every student in my class access information so that they can read/listen/watch/interact with it in the way I intended during or for class?  Are they able to attend virtually in some capacity if they are not attending in person (and have they tested that method so they know it works)?  And not only is my course acces...
